Description & Supplies

"Students will paint first on the Yupo paper and then paint the same subject or a similar subject on the traditional 140 lb. watercolor paper. Participants are urged to bring photos especially of landscapes that feature trees, wooded areas, floral, shrubs, bushes, water and paths. It doesn't matter what the season the photos were taken in since artists can chose to paint with any colors they desire.

The focus of the workshop is to experience the benefits and nuances of both papers and observe how the same painting looks different because of the difference in the surfaces. Please note that I paint more in an impressionistic style and the approach I use lends itself to this manner of painting. It conveys a more natural look. Little drawing will be needed.

I will give a brief demo in the beginning, talk about the approach I use, and start right in with painting. I will give each student individual attention and answer questions.

I will provide one sheet of the Yupo paper to each student. The participants will be responsible for bringing their own traditional watercolor paper.

I suggest arrival at the Avalon Library no later than 8:45am to set up materials so as to be ready to start the workshop promptly at 9:00am

I suggest the participants bring a bag lunch. We will break for lunch about 12:30 / 1:00pm."             Anna Marie Zabielski

Tools / Supplies / Suggestions

- Easel if you normally work at an easel. I personally work sitting at a table
- A plastic cover or table cover

- Pieces of cardboard, old mat board, etc. This will be used to cover that part of your painting that you do not want to flick paint on
- Wear very old clothes or bring a smock
- A piece of plexiglas or something non-porous for the Yupo paper. This paper does not require tape to hold it in place and remains flat with the help of the water.
- Container for water
- Spray bottle
- Paper towels
- Pencil and kneaded eraser
- Professional grade watercolors
- Palette or butcher's tray
- Brushes: Rounds and Flats
- Ugly brushes or old brushes to be used for applying masking fluid, if you wish
- Liquid masking fluid for preserving whites and liquid soap, if using masking fluid
- A masking fluid "lifter"
- 140 lb. paper (Cold Press). I usually use Arches; however, any professional grade good quality 140 lb. paper is acceptable. It would be best that the paper is "stretched" and stapled to a board before class.
- DO NOT USE STUDENT GRADE, STRATHMORE OR CANSON PAPER SINCE YOU WILL NOT GET GOOD RESULTS AND WILL BE DISAPPOINTED.
